Jolie Cherie Season Killers

As winter closes its doors for the year, it seems the season is having a wholesale party, throwing out the last of its cold-night confetti and rainy-morning musicals — and for the super-low price of fuck you, it has finally sold me some of its gray-tinged emotions, draping my eyes in pure sad face ( :< ).

Yes, I’m experiencing winter fatigue, and my melancholy seemed to have no partner in audio.

– The Weeknd? Too whiny for me.

– Old favorites? No, not feeling it.

– “Esoteric” & “experimental” sounds/naturemusik? If I liked repetition that much I’d become a bureaucrat (or gone to grad school).

Luckily as I began to lose hope, a certain group added us on Soundcloud.

Their name is Jolie Cherie, and their music punched me in the back of the neck.

Based out of Paris, Jolie Cherie is a “more” minimalistic electro-pop threesome featuring Etienne, Samir & Mélina. The group has received some hefty coverage throughout the last couple years — most notably having their work showcased in Kitsune Compilations No.’s 8 & 10.

Focusing on dance-floor worthy beats and bass-lines with nostalgic, beautiful and melancholic compositions layered on top, Jolie Cherie exudes a distinct nu-retro-pop vibe — add into this mix some relaxed, clear and dynamic vocals, and you have a three-way season killer.

So here I am, listening, with Mélina’s honest-sounding voice keeping me warm, Etienne’s compositions plucking away at my heart-strings, and Samir’s beats moving my feet, creating a successful sound to both match and push away my Winter blues. Well done everyone.

Jolie Cherie’s most recent release, Barcelona can be purchased on iTunes via the Opus Label One compilation that was just released 2 days ago. Do yourself a favor and check it out, you might find an artist that punches you in the back of the neck.

I’m looking forward to seeing this group progress even more in 2012. Hopefully there will be a few more releases for the year.

Best of luck,

– Sweetest Drip.
