'Lineage' by Shigeto: A Beat-iful Masterpiece

Shigeto

Shigeto composes chill, ambient instrumentals

that soar beyond the basic, passionless pieces pumped out by lackluster artists and musicians.

Zach Shigeto Saginaw is a producer for those who enjoy future-beat-frescoes that illuminate the regions of the brain not used when booty-bouncing. Like other well-known artists signed with Ghostly International, Zach is a maestro when it comes to providing the listener with pensive, beautiful, or straight-up transcendental beatscapes.

Released earlier this week, the eight-song Lineage EP is not only a showcase of Shigeto’s prolific touch for such music, but also a homage to family history and personal upbringing.

The Lineage cover photo features Zach’s great-grandfather’s home in pre-war Hiroshima. On the back cover is another black and white picture of his great-grandfather posing at one of the infamous 40s era Japanese-American internment camps.

Lineage, in words, may be told differently from Zach’s point of view.

Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. — Ghostly International

Lineage, through speakers, is a compilation of Shigeto’s ever-growing sound.

Shigeto – Lineage (prologue)

Chimes, shakers, and the wettest keystrokes — even the interjection of a siren’s call: all of these elements convey something that word of mouth simply can’t.

Zach’s background in jazz drumming as well as growing up with experiences from Ann Arbor’s electronica scene make up the signature Shigeto musical purveyance.

Though claiming not to be a virtuoso in the below interview with SceneStar, it’s clear that Shigeto is something wholly organic beyond flesh-and-bone percussionist and electronic music composer.

As apparent with Lineage and the entirety of Shigeto’s discography, melding electronic manipulation with live percussion results in a passionate display of unabashed expression.
